Megara and Hercules, Hog Island Boas

Hog's are a naturally hypomelanistic, slow growing species of boa constrictor that were nearly driven to the brink of exctinction during the 1980's, due to over-harvesting of wild populations for the pet trade. These 2 are a captive bred male and female, and will become a breeding pair when old enough.

These are very nice boas, and being semi-arboreal, love to spend their time hanging from their branches- they also eat from their branches 95% of the time. They can be hissy and snappy, much like many boa species, but are calming down nicely.

Hog Islands display dramatic colour changes from morning to night, being very pale at certain times of the day, and quite dark during others. They are fantastic strike feeders and my 2 enjoy a diet of chicks and rats.
